Other Historical Sites You May Not Have Visited Yet

By Jennifer Bowers

If you take a lot of vacations, you have probably seen a lot of sun and surf, or perhaps you are the type that loves to glide down the side of a mountain surrounded by piles of fresh snow. However there are several other destinations you may want to visit, instead of the usual, tried and tested vacation spots you've been to. There are some great historical sites out there that can make for an interesting getaway, and many are fun for the whole family. Make sure, though, that you're visiting a location that could appeal to yourself and your children alike.

Historical sites range from war sites to places where you may see what things were like over a hundred or so years ago. In the state of Pennsylvania, there isn't a more popular tourist attraction than Gettysburg. Aside from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania offers replicas of 19th century life, with people dressing up and living like it was back in the olden days. Using the technology of the era, these replicas feature exhibits such as candle making and weaving. If American history is your thing, then Gettysburg, or the state of Pennsylvania itself, is a nice place to visit.

You can visit other states as well with a wealth of historical value. A lot of these places are open to the general public, and can be found in places that aren't usually tourist hot spots. You can visit homes of former US Presidents, great writers and painters, and recording artists and movie stars who made their mark on American history. For example, how about giving Graceland a visit? Elvis Presley, after all, is the King of Rock and Roll, and someone recognizable on a first name basis ? arguably the most influential and commercially successful artist of the 20th century.

If you're still stumped and needing a good historical spot to visit, your best option is to research online. You should search on interest or the general area of the country to which you would like to go. You can also try your travel agent to see what they have to offer you. You can go with a package that includes other activities, or you can find something that includes many historical sites exclusively.

Regardless of your interests and that of your family, there are many options to choose from. Not only can you have a lot of fun, your children will learn a lot from such a vacation.
