Ideas For Backyard Family Vacations

By Kathleen Burch

You can still have a vacation right at home when travel and lodging are cost prohibitive. That's right, in your own backyard. Within reasonable distance to museums, historic sites, campgrounds, and beautiful state parks is where most of us live. There are things that you might find in your own local area that would come as a surprise to you.

By doing some research in your area, you can find free or low cost activities and sites to visit. Even if it's just a park visit for a picnic, you can still schedule something for each day of the week. Local public beaches can also be found in some of the areas. You can plan an outing at a local public beach. Historical sites can also be visited. Most of these are educational, free, and fun for both parents and kids.

You can even plan activities at home just as if you were at an exotic vacation spot. For each day, you can have a different theme. These are but a few examples.

Beach day. Sun tanning, volley ball, make some fancy icy drinks to sip on in the sun, have a picnic.

Have a camp day. Build a little fire if allowed in your area or stay in a tent or sleeping bags under the stars, roast marshmallows, make smores, and sing campfire songs.

Have a backyard fair. How about creating booths with games like ring toss or balloon popping in order to win little prizes.

You can have a Colonial Day. How about dressing up and living in another era. A lot of fun is what this would be. You can have no lighting except candles and lanterns, no T.V. or radio, no video games or computer. You may think it's boring, but you may be able to come up with some fun ideas in order to keep occupied.

How about a Cultural Day? As you learn about different cultures, you can live, celebrate, dress, and eat. Irish, Native American, or Spanish Day are just some of the examples. Another great learning experience. Try to include some ethnic games to make it even more fun and interesting.

Some imagination and a little work will be needed in these theme days at home but it will also be loads of fun for everyone. In the creation is where half of the fun will be so everyone should pitch in. As long as you are creative and use your imagination, then you can have a wonderful vacation right in your own backyard. You may even have more fun than actually being in another part of the world!
