Key West Tarpon Fishing Anglers

By Natasha Moore

Key West tarpon fishing is an activity that has benefited many fish eaters and the fishers. This brownish or silver fish has large body that is covered with huge scales. Its lungs help in inhaling oxygen found on water surfaces. It has a large heavy bone that points upward and the mouth is large. Key West, located south of an Island in Florida has been a place many go for trips to look at fish.

The fish has three sources of food; small bait fish, shrimps and crabs. It migrates annually in the months of March and June and move to the Oceanside flats of the Florida Island. At this time, fishers move to Florida to fish large amounts of this fish. They employ different fishing methods depending on the one they prefer. Light tackle is one of them and uses the food to attract them on the surface water.

Night fishing is the other method done in the evening, almost sunset. Here, one uses spin casting attires at dusk and rolls a plug near deep channel. This method is good when all conditions are accurate. Additionally, one can get more of them using this method since it is done at night. This is when they are active due to low light intensity as they are nocturnal.

Hook should be set hard since this fish has a mouth that has similar consistency and texture as a cinder block. The other method is the use of a fly rod, which is mostly done early in the morning where one feeds them a fly. Use of fly rod to fish is the easiest method. Fly rods are sold in different colors and patterns and one should make a wise choice that can ease the activity.

During the morning hours, fish moves in deep waters; therefore difficult to hook them using the fly. They hardly go far to feed and the only way to trap them is to use a fly with a color that can attract the fish. Fly rod method is popular among anglers also most preferred. The fishes have no exact time to harvest them since are presence through the year unless when they have migrated.

The preferable time to fish during the day are afternoons and mornings. This is when there is change in tides as a result of the moon. Since this fish is a tidal feeder, it feeds during these times of the day and this is when one can harvest them with ease. They are mostly in motion while looking for food and one can trap them easily.

The most preferred months to fish tarpon depend on the times they migrate. Although anglers go where they migrate in March and June and harvest large amounts, the months of April, July and May is when anglers go to fish. Some do not get good returns since many of them use that time to get tarpons for sale and for meals at home.

In brief, Key West tarpon fishing is a great opportunity for anglers. When it comes to angling activity, tarpon is the best fish and Key West being the best place. The fish is big and amazing to feed a whole family. Full day chartered fishers can possibly get enough catch for both sale and dinner.
