How To Improve Putting In Golf

By Janell Bowers

Whether playing a round on a championship course or just a round of miniature golf, putting is a key part of the game. A good putt can reduce your score. Practicing your putt will result in improvement. There are several tips on how to improve putting.

An essential part of putting is to "read the green". This means to look at the area of grass around the hole. While reading the green, you should take into account the slope of the green, the length of the grass, and the wind speed and direction it is blowing. When you read the green, it will help you decide the speed needed for the ball to go into the hole.

When you swing the putter, only your upper body should move. If the lower body moves, it can negatively affect the swing. In order to learn to control the lower body, a wall in can be used. Making your putt while standing near the wall will help you gauge how much your lower body is moving. If your behind hits the wall, you will know you need to find a way to stop moving your lower body.

Body stance is a factor when going to putt. If you stand over the ball, you can see better than if you stand behind the ball. The distance that you swing back also affects the putt. The back swing should only be a few inches.

Although a good putter can be expensive, having the appropriate one will vastly improve your putt. There are different putters that vary in weight. The putter that you use should have the right feel for you.

The focus of putting is getting the ball into the hole. In order to do this, aim is important. Lining up the ball can be done with the help of some tools. One tool is a chalk line that can be used to draw a line from the ball to the hole. Another tool is to draw lines on the putter and on the ball. When you place the ball next to the putter, the lines direct the ball to its destination.

Short shots can improve your putt. Taking shots that are a short distance, until you make it every time you shoot will help your putt become more effective. Each distance that you overcome, will put you that much closer to your goal. Continue to lengthen your distance until you have covered the whole green, practicing each distance until you are adept.

Any practice you can do in your spare time with a golf practice set will enhance your game. Purchase a putting set, then put it up in your office or living room and get to work.

One handed putting is a good drill to learn which hand is dominant. You can try putting with each hand multiple times. The hand that you had the most success with is your dominant hand. This one is the one you should use when putting.

Any variable in your putting will cause your putt to be ineffective in completing the hole. Continuity and rhythm will cause your putt to be adequate. The putter you use, the way you stand and line up the ball must be constant.
