Creating A Supply Checklist For Altamaha River Camping

By Casandra Newton

The Altamaha River is a part of the largest river system east of the Mississippi, and a beautiful center of outdoor enjoyment in south-central Georgia. Altamaha river camping is a popular activity among outdoor enthusiasts, providing all sorts of opportunity for adventure as well as relaxation. When preparing for this type of trip, it's important to consider all the possible activities in order to create an effective supply checklist. This is necessary to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment for the entire camping party.

For those who truly love an outdoor adventure, a campsite is more of a "home base" than a destination. That means that a camping trip really involves a lot more than the simple scoping out of a campsite and the pitching of a tent. Canoeing, fishing and hiking are just a sampling the the outdoor activities that can be enjoyed while river camping, and should be considered when putting together a supply checklist for the trip.

"Pack In, Pack Out": this is the rule when setting up camp in the wilderness. This rule should be considered while making the grocery list for the trip, as everything will have to be carried to the campsite as well as remnants carried back out. Those who set up camp in and established campground may have the benefit of trash receptacles, but otherwise campers are responsible for their own trash removal. These elements are important considerations with regard to how much members of the party will have to carry, and how far. Available cooking equipment should also be taken into consideration in the creation of a grocery checklist for the trip.

Leisure time activities are an important element and should be planned for accordingly. The ideal leisure time agenda is completely different from one person to the next, but encompasses an important part of the relaxation element of time spent in nature. It might be reading a good book or playing charades around the campfire. Whatever a person's preference, there's no better way to relax after a long day of hiking or canoeing.

A first aid kit is a must. Be sure it is well stocked with fresh bandages and appropriate medicines. A first aid kit for outdoor excursions should always include basic items such as pain reliever, cold packs, elastic bandages, anti-itch cream and antibiotic ointment. Don't forget the bug spray and sunscreen!

Always pack warm clothing items, even if its summertime. Weather can change abruptly in any season. It's also important to remember to pack appropriate shoes for a variety of activities, both planned and unplanned. Sandals, water shoes and hiking shoes are basic footwear that should be included in the checklist for most any type of outdoor trip.

Personal items, such as soap and shampoo, are a given, but it's important to think about the camping facilities before you pack these items. If there will be shower facilities at the campsite, for example, regular shampoo is fine. If the campsite will be further from civilization, however, a dry shampoo is recommended.

Altamaha river camping can be an extraordinary adventure for the entire party. Adequate planning helps to ensure that everyone has the best time possible. By creating a comprehensive checklist prior to packing, a person can be sure to have everything they need for the duration of the trip.
