The Panama Region Called Pedasi

By Tyler Ramos

Pedasi is a town located in the southeastern area of the Azuero Peninsula, which is located in the Pacific coast of Panama. It is within the Pedasi District, which is part of the Los Santos province. The town is primarily a fishing area and has a population estimated at only 2000 people.

The small village includes several restaurants, shops and supermarkets, two banks, and one library and health clinic. There is cable, Internet and telephone service available throughout the jurisdiction. The area is known for hosting annual carnivals, its pristine beaches, and water-related activities, such as surfing, sports fishing and diving. It is also located near many of national preserves and parks of Panama.

The area is known for its neat streets and mostly Spanish colonial architecture. There is a main roadway, plaza and numerous civic buildings that are located near quiet residential areas. Pedasi has a reputation for being among the main attractions of the region of Los Santos. The town is only a five-hour car drive from Panama City. Private and charter flights are accepted on the small local airstrip.

There are 12 beaches near the town. Because of this, many visitors come to the area looking for water activities. Surfing is a popular activity, particularly on Playa Venao, which is one of many beaches. Most beach areas are known for being good places for surfers to catch waves. Sports fishing is common, as many types of fish are readily available. Because the continental shelf drops by the shore, pelagic game fish are all around. Sailfish, grouper, roosterfish, amberjack and cubera snapper are other year-round fish breeds. Wahoo, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna are considered more seasonal.

An island wildlife refuge called Isla Iguana is a short boat ride from the Playa El Arenal. This area has beaches filled with white sand because of coral reef that surrounds the island. Numerous species of animals, including sea turtles, birds, rays, fish, eels and reptiles live in this area.

Many of the locals are considered laidback and friendly in their nature. They are known to be quite warm and excepting of visitors. Men are often dressed in traditional sandals called cuttarras, and black and white hats. Women often wear traditional garb as well, particularly at special events. These clothes include many details and are handmade.

In the second month of every year, a major carnival is held in the village. This is a highlight for locals. The area is divided into two areas, the upper street and the lower street. The former known as Calle Arriba and the latter called Calle Abajo. Each street is given a queen who competes with the other queen to have the best fireworks, music and floats. After all celebrations, people are asked to vote and the winning queen is based on the popular vote.

Pedasi is a town of 2000 people located within Panama. Despite its small size, the area is lively and brings many new visitors from around the world. Foreigners and locals enjoy the land because of water activities available, such as fishing, surfing and diving. Most locals are nice and host cultural celebrations every year.
