A Boat License Is Needed In Your State

By Elinor Tran

Obtaining a New Jersey boat license can easily be done at your own convenience. The requirements for a license are met by passing a state approved boating safety course. A boating certificate is required for an operators who is age 13 or above to legally operate a boat.

The first step in this process is to see if there is an exam in your area. This can be done on websites that are approved by the state. One good site that you can use is the BoatUS Foundation. The site includes a search page that can be used to find the location of safety courses that are in your area.

You can find approved boater safety courses by visiting the Department of Law and Public Safety page for more information. Links on the page are available for a Frequently Asked Questions page that has a series of answers to important questions. You can even find links to various sites offering these courses in your area.

You need to choose your state from the drop down. You will then enter your Zip Code and then a radius or area to search. A list results is displayed when you click the Search button. Some sites may offer you an online boating safety course.

Search the BoatUS Foundation website for the exam locator page. This page allows you to search for a proctored exam in your area. A proctored exam is an exam that has a monitor. The exam will consist of about 50 questions that require written answers.

You will receive your new jersey boat license or certificate after successful completion of an exam that is proctored. This means that an individual will monitor the exam. A voucher or acknowledgment of the successful completion of the safety course is needed to sit for the exam.
