Golf As A Sport For The Family

By John Dorian

Many people don't enjoy playing golf because it takes up so much time. That may be true and you may complain about it, but it would be better, though, if your entire family went golfing. Children can enjoy golf as much as you (or your spouse) may enjoy it, from the brisk walk around the golf course to the hand-eye coordination and improvement of both gross and fine motor skills.

If your family isn't too much into golf, it's best to take lessons before anything else. You can either have them take classes at the local driving range, or with a Golf Pro who frequents said course. Before going onto the finer points of golf, you must all start by learning the fundamentals. You can turn golf practice into a great family activity, and the moment you notice that you're all making some progress, you can schedule an actual round of golf.

Young children may not manage the walk round 18 holes, and even with a cart, you might want to consider playing 9-hole rounds at first. Golf is a gentleman's sport in many ways, so follow the unwritten rules of etiquette, such as letting other players play if you're holding things up. This is especially important, since children can be hyperactive, and a golf course is not a place to go ranting and raving - make sure your kids learn and follow the rules as well. Safety precautions are important too, particularly with children who tend to forget where to stand and how to keep out of the way of swinging golf clubs.

If your children get to learn golf, they can learn valuable lessons about self-control and managing their temper. No matter how badly they play, they cannot lose their temper and throw clubs around (although we've all seen some adults behave that way on the golf course!).

The next step after getting a feel for the game would be to schedule one big golfing vacation! Golf resorts offer a lot of attractive packages which have all related fees included in the package cost. Some resorts offer child-friendly packages, with fun golf games and lessons included. You and your spouse can have your own chance to play a round on your own, should you choose these packages.

Eighteen holes of golf is no joke, though at first it certainly looks like a walk in the park. Golf can serve many purposes - first, as a fun game for the whole family, second, as a form of exercise, and third, as a chance to see the great outdoors for a few quality hours. No team-oriented sport can boast of the same.
