The Best Of Asuncion, Paraguay

By Jonny Blair

Here's a top 5 things to do in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Forget places like Rio, Buenos Aires and La Paz and head to a proper off the beaten track South American city. Paraguay's capital city of Asuncion is a great place to escape the tourists. It offers a host of great things to see and do and you should check it out!

1. Head to the first ever train station in South America

Asuncion housed South America's first ever train station and instead of destroying it when it wasn't needed, they have turned it into a museum. This is a great place to head to and reminisce and relax! Plus you're one of very few tourists so you will have the whole place to yourself!

2. Slums and Argentina

From Asuncion you can look across at Argentina. Or even better you can cross the border or get a boat trip on the river. Paraguay also borders Bolivia and Brazil but with Asuncion it's just Argentina and really worth checking out. You can get buses into Argentina as well if need be plus there's the area of the slums which is cool to look at.

3. Reminisce about Jose Luis Chilavert

As a keen football fan it's a great idea to check out the football stadium in every city you visit. Paraguay's national stadium is in Asuncion and is called Estadio Defensores del Chaco. It's really worth a trip out to. This is a small country which has punched above its weight and even reached the World Cup Quarter Finals a few times. The stadium is easily reached by bus and is very big.

4. Plaza de Los Heroes and Buildings

War and politics are never far away as a tourist and I was slightly moved by my trip here. A small room which is a monument and memorial to Paraguay's chosen few. I'd recommend it.

After checking out the Heroes Square and monuments don't forget that Asuncion has lots of other cool old buildings to check out including Churches, a Palace, a Cathedral and old style skyscrapers.

5. Go for a night out!

Asuncion is relaxed and a totally amazing spot for some beers and drinks at night. You will be surprised at how many cool bars and pubs there are in and around the streets. Some bars even brew their own beer and live music is often played. Asuncion at night is a fantastic place to party.
