I want to buy a Dutch bike and live in Calgary, I had a hard time finding a bike shop that specializes in anything but road and mountain bikes. With Dutch bikes gaining in popularity this was a little surprising but the shops in the city seem more centered in moving tonnes of product as opposed to serving niche market stuff. I turned to the internet and Google to start my search instead.
My reason for buying a Dutch bike would be to simply have a decent bike to ride around town. Which is the real value with the Dutch bike from my perspective. The upright riding position, comfortable saddle and just relaxed style generally seems right for cruising over to the coffee shop.
I started by looking at the single speeds from a few of the manufactures labels I had seen locked up in the bike rack. For cruising around town, I don't see a need for anything other than a single speed. Brooklyn cruiser builds a cool, laid back looking single speed Dutch style bike called the Bedford.
Brooklyn Cruiser describes it as a free spirited rig for hitting the bike paths, great for riding to work and getting things done around town. It also mentions all the all the things that I am looking for in my next bike, squishy tires, a suspended seat and just all around comfort.
That really is all that I am looking for, the appeal of big curved handle bars and tires that don't pick up every crack in the road. I have a few bikes but none of them could be described that way.
The Linus Roadster Classic is the other Dutch style bike that I really like. It is also a single speed but has a little sportier look and feel than the unit from Brooklyn Cruiser. Linus describes it is a elegant bicycle in its purest form. Stripped down, clean and profile inspired by the bikes of days gone by. I really like that and I agree with their description. It certainly has clean and sharp minimalistic lines.
I don't think I would ever buy a bike without first riding it and I was stoked to come across the place to shop in Calgary for urban cycling gear while I was doing my research. While online research is great, nothing takes the place of a spin and the ability to touch and feel when it comes to a purchase like a bike. BikeBike in Calgary is a newer shop in the city and I couldn't believe their entire business was built around the commuter, Dutch bike lifestyle.
BikeBike is the place to go in Calgary for Dutch Bikes, Cargo bikes and, like I said, anything that you might need for commuting or recreational urban cycling. I recommend you check them out.
