Diving Offers Some Of The Best In The Caribbean

By Chloe Gib

Cozumel vacations on the picturesque and archaeologically interesting Mayan Riviera are now along the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The island receives thousands of visitors each year. Its sub-tropical location at the western edge of the Caribbean Sea makes it an ideal beach destination all year long. Many of its visitors go to experience Cozumel diving.

The island is famed for its warm water, excellent visibility and easy drift diving. Water temperature is warm at 20-25 degrees Celsius all year. Many divers eschew a wetsuit. The amazing water clarity expands the underwater experience enjoyed on each dive. The gentle current flowing around the isle allows divers to float lazily a meter or so above the reefs as they drift slowly.

The island has a series of about thirty separate reefs that line its western coast as a more or less contiguous formation. They sit on the leeward side, in the calm water separating Cozumel from the Yucatan Peninsula. Most of the reefs lie to the south of the main island town of San Miguel. Notable exceptions are the Barracuda and San Juan reefs, both of which lie just north of San Miguel.

The ten shallow water reefs include Paradise, Chancanab, Balones of Chancanab, Paso el Cedral, Santa Maria, San Francisco, Yucab, Tormentos, Shallow Palancar and Shallow Columbia. All of these spots sit in less than 70 feet of water and are suitable for snorkeling as well as scuba diving. They are frequently used to train new divers and build the confidence of novice divers.

The deep reefs include Palancar, Deep Palancar, Palancar Gardens, Palancar Caves, Chun Chakab, Maracaibo, La Francesca, Little Caves, Broken Reef (or Little Horseshoe), Big Horseshoe, Santa Rosa, Cedral Wall, Columbia Reef, Punta Sur and Punta Sur II, Puntablanca Wall, Virgin Wall. There are also the San Juan and Barracuda reefs at the north end of the island.

The Yucab reef is located south of Playa San Francisco in the Parque Marino. It boasts many unusual and colorful coral formations. It is suitable for beginners because of its shallow depth of around 13 to 16 meters (40 to 55 feet). The prevailing current is perfect for drift diving at various depths. Marine life includes turtles, sharks, grouper, lion fish, eels and scores of small, multi-colored tropical fish.

The Palancar formation is covered by many dive packages. Palancar Caves consists of tunnels, deep buttresses, small caves and immense caverns at depths of 17 to 25 meters (60 to 90 feet). Deep Palancar is a challenging wall dive at a depth of 25 to 35 meters (90 to 120 feet). These deep areas are rarely crowded and pristine. The Palancar series of reefs arguably contain the best of Cozumel diving and is considered a highlight of any Cozumel vacation.
