North Carolina Cape Fear River Guide

By Rhoda Ellison

Visitors to the NC southeast coast will need a Cape Fear River guide. There is just so much to see and do, and it becomes chaotic if not separated into a specific type or list of preferred interests. Visitors can enjoy the islands and beaches or focus on bird-watching, historic attractions, lighthouse tours and so on.

The hub for all this tourist activity is the city of Wilmington. It is a thin, long triangle that fits in neatly between the Atlantic Ocean and the river's mouth as it pours into the ocean. This means two water-fronts filled with promenades and cafes, water sports and fishing, beaches and coastal reserves and a whole lot more.

Given its modernity and wealth of quaint and historic attractions, Wilmington is the perfect combination of a traditional tourist destination and a beach holiday. It is also the ideal base for an exploration of the entire coast. Hop on to a charter or cruise boat and steam out of Wilmington. Visit the islands from the inland side and then the Atlantic Coast all the way to Calabash where South Carolina begins.

A big part of this epic voyage will be spent exploring the islands and coastal reserves from the inland side. Wrightsville Beach and Masonboro Island are part of the Wilmington city tour, and can be skipped for the purposes of this cruise. So the first stop on the itinerary will be Carolina Beach.

Then comes the beautiful Kure Beach followed by Zeke's Island coastal reserve and Bald Head Island which is literally the tip of the coast. All these destinations front both the river and the Atlantic. The only exception is Southport, which is located on the other bank.

Southport is one of those dreamy little villages where time stands still. It has a small population that wants nothing to do with the bedlam in Myrtle Beach or Wilmington. People come here to escape from the big city madness and relax on the marinas, take scenic drives and visit quaint attractions like the Southern plantation. It will be hard to move on from such a perfect little place, but now the Cape Fear River guide must become a coastal guide for the trip from Bald Head Island to Calabash. cape fear river guide
