A Cursory Overview Of Paris Modern Art Museums

By Pierre Fontaine

Lots of people visiting Paris on vacation make the mistake of thinking there's only one modern art museum in Paris.

But the fact is that, there are a bunch of spots in Paris showcasing modern art. There are two major museums you can visit which are known as modern art museums.

This museum is denoted as the Palace of Modern Art in the city of Paris and is among the two major places to go in Paris to see modern art. The Modern art museum is actually only one part of a much larger palace located at 11 Avenue du President Wilson, named after the American President during the First World War Woodrow Wilson.

If you decided to take the metro system to get to the Palace of Modern Art, best stations to stop are Alma Marceau and Iena which are few walks away to your destination.

The Palace of Modern Art contains artworks showing every school of art in France in the 20th century. Among these are Cubism, Dada, Expressionism and Fauvism.

Among the French modern artists featured in Palace of Modern Art are Duffy, Modigliani, Soutine, Braque and Picasso.

The Palace of Modern Art serves the public at 10 AM to 5:30 PM on Tuesdays to Sundays. It is open up to 6:30 PM on weekends to take in more. If you intend to see a temporary exhibit conducted in this museum, you will be obliged to pay an additional fee.

The second spot to see modern artworks in Paris is situated at the well-known Pompidou Center. It showcases 3000 pieces of modern artworks not only from France but several parts of the world. But then it often leases its pieces to other art museums in the city and other parts of the country, so it is desirable to check with the custodian if you want to see a particular art piece.

Like the city modern art museum in Paris, this museum hosts number of temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists from France. These are generally conducted in the southern wing of the museum. Entrance to this museum in Paris can be accessed from Rue Saint Merri.
